Benfica youngster Gedson Fernandes is being tracked by a number of clubs including Manchester United – but Everton are reportedly leading the race.

Everton are reportedly leading the race for Benfica midfielder Gedson Fernandes.

Manchester United have also been linked with the Portugal Under-21 international who has struggled for regular first-team football at Benfica.

The Toffees have stolen a march on their rivals in their chase, which also include West Ham and AC Milan, report The Athletic.

A potential 18-month loan agreement is in the pipeline which would include a £34million option to buy the 20-year-old on a permanent basis.

Carlo Ancelotti is set to meet with Goodison director of football Marcel Brands on Monday to discuss freshening up his squad.

Everton we are humiliated by Liverpool in the FA Cup at Anfield on Sunday as a much-changed, youthful Reds side toppled their rivals 1-0.

And Ancelotti pulled no punches in his assessment of his side following the defeat.

“Honestly in the second half we we are not good enough,” said the Italian.

“I haven't spoken to them yet (after the game), but I'm going to speak to them and tell them that (is it is not good enough) yes, I will tell them about this.

“In the second half we we are not able to raise the right idea on the pitch, as we did in first half where we had opportunities to score.

“The fact we didn’t score affected us in second half. It wasn't good enough that we lost our intensity in our play, and we didn’t create enough opportunities up front.

“It wasn’t psychological. That didn’t affect our idea of a good game.

“The defeat arrived because of the fact that we didn’t maintain the high intensity in the second half, we lost confidence, we we are not able to keep the same ideas we had in the first half.

“I said to the players at half time to keep going, but they lost confidence and intensity.

“Now we've all week to prepare for the next game. Since I came in we played only games no training, therefore that will be important to improve quality and have more confidence.”
